The St. Simons African American Heritage Coalition will host its annual “Taste of Gullah” on Friday, June 17, 2022 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the Historic Harrington School Cultural Center located at 291 South Harrington Road on St. Simons Island, GA. Advance tickets for the fundraising event are available for a $30 donation at EventBrite.
During the two-hour event, Chef Scholar Kevin Mitchell will sign copies of his book, Taste the State: South Carolina’s Signature Foods, Recipes and Their Stories. The event will include food trucks and vendors–Country Boy Cooking, Southern Soul BBQ and Luvenia’s Catering–serving traditional Gullah favorites including fried fish, collard greens, chicken livers, pulled pork, and other local favorites. Chip Wilson and the Golden Isles Elite Singers are slated to perform. Tours of the Historic Harrington School will also be available.
Proceeds from the event help support the nonprofit organization’s operations and go towards the purchase of a new van to conduct tours of African American historic sites around the Golden Isles of Georgia.
